MLA Book Citation Format

Works Cited format for a book

How to Cite a Book in MLA Step by Step

1

Locate the author

Check the title page, not the cover. List the author's name as Last, First. For edited collections with no single author, start with the editor's name followed by 'editor.'

2

Copy the full title

Use the title page for the exact wording. Italicize the entire title. If there is a subtitle, include it after a colon.

3

Note the edition and volume

If the book is a 2nd edition or later, include it. For multi-volume works, add the volume number (vol. 2).

4

Find the publisher and year

The publisher is on the title page or copyright page. The year is on the copyright page. Use the most recent copyright year.
